One of the things I liked about this book is that it's basically the story of the author's tragic upbringing in poverty--a real drama, yet there was so much humor in it. Based on comments I had read about the book, I was surprised at how funny it was: Jeannette's mother playing piano outside and her 14-month pregnancy, her father's church outbursts and his skeedadles from the hospitals, and the translation that was necessary between the kids and their hillbilly principal in Welch. Jeannette didn't see herself as a victim, and though life was hard she loved and saw goodness in her messed-up, selfish parents. She came across as brave, honest, and unapologetic.
The piggy bank part reminded me of my grandma. When my grandma was 4 years old, her father left her and her mother for another woman, and took my grandma's piggy bank with him. You can't get much lower than that. As soon as I heard about the money Jeannette and her siblings were collecting, I wondered where they were going to hide the piggy bank. Obviously they didn't, and it didn't surprise me in the least that their father took it. ...less

A beautifully written novel about good vs. evil and our power to choose which path we take.
"I believe that there is one story in the world, and only one. . . . Humans are caught—in their lives, in their thoughts, in their hungers and ambitions, in their avarice and cruelty, and in their kindness and generosity too—in a net of good and evil. . . . There is no other story. A man, after he has brushed off the dust and chips of his life, will have left only the hard, clean questions: Was it good or was it evil? Have I done well—or ill?"
