I didn't like it. I really don't enjoy these contemporary confessional "memoirs." Call me a prude, but what is the point of reading about these uncomfortable sexual experiences and sick childhood memories? Does it make us feel better about our own weird childhood memories or our own awkward encounters with sex? I, for one, don't think so. Reading Running with Scissors didn't make me feel better about ANYTHING!

My students often practice writing their responses to the following quote "Literature opens a dark window on the soul, revealing more about what is bad in human nature than what is good." I love this quote. I believe that great literature has the power to illuminate the darkness within the human heart...I think of Julius Caesar, Lord of the Flies, Heart of Darkness, Native Son, or even Harry Potter. But in shedding light on that darkness, these novels still seek to uplift, to edify human experience in some way...by teaching us what we are capable of, by pointing out the sins, or the fears, or the darkness that we must avoid.

It's not realism I reject...the novels I mentioned pierce right to the center of real human emotions like fear, rage, apathy, greed, and hatred. But even in the case of the most hopeless endings, they are cathartic. If the story is really great, it causes us to take stock of our lives and examine our hearts and souls.

Running with Scissors just doesn't match that.
(less)

As a very non-feminine woman, I didn't think I would get much out of this book. But I found I related to a lot of what she said. I may not be in love with my apartment, but I do LOVE my neighborhood. I understand what she means when she talks about "living in her neighborhood." Her chapter on maintenance had me laughing out loud. And I hate purses too.

Eh, it was OK. Quite different than what I was expecting, actually. I could connect with a lot of what she said about the struggle of being fat. But this book was a little more militant than I was wanting. Always on the defensive. Always. I don't know. I guess I just don't care about "fat acceptance" as much as she does.
