I saw the movie first (I didn't know it was based on a book!) and absolutely fell in love with it. Not only was the story beautiful but the soundtrack was phenomenal and the movie well cast. Of course, I'm a sucker for James McAvoy, but it wasn't just him that made it wonderful, it was everyone else as well.
When I finally picked up the book my mind didn't change one bit. I couldn't really picture anyone better for any of the parts. The wonderful thing about the book was that (as is usually the case with me) i loved it more than the movie. I had thought the scenes where Robbie is off at war were a bit drawn out and actually a little boring in the movie. Not so with the book. So, I work in a costume shop and we just did this show so I had to read the book. I ended up liking the show a lot more, but this wasn't a bad read. I found myself getting sucked into some the movies Molina told rather than the story of Molina and Valentin. Also, while the same general idea is there the show is a bit different. I also have to admit i didn't read any of the footnotes. I started to read one but thought it was kind of dull and actually took away from the story.
