"You just have to read this one. Yes, it's about fish and fishing, but I had no idea how much one food-fish could lead to such major exploration, discovery, war, environmental trauma and recovery. Oh, and it's got recipes throughout...

Ok, this is kind of a tough read. A comprehensive report primarily from the Native perspective on the entire history of the American government's dealings with the Sioux nation, this book was actually held up in legal battles for 8 years because of what it reveals about the FBI, BIA and our nation's other history...
I have to admit, it took me ages to finish-- I get mired down by moment-by-moment accounts of action and legal cases involving the FBI, but as relatively one-sided as this telling is, it also makes an earnest attempt to get both sides of the story told.
This is an important story that I would recommend to anyone interested in the FBI- especially their infiltration activities in the 70's like Donnie Brasco and the Ku Klux Klan-- or anyone who wants to learn about Native Americans, their reservations and treaties, and why murders on Pine Ridge often go un-investigated. The findings here are stunning-- the revelations maddening.
So what if this is a "slanted" account? These are people who have been villianized for 2 centuries and given virtually no legal voice. I, for one, would like to hear what they have to say.
Take it with a grain or two of salt, but listen to their side of the story....less

This book had my head spinning. I didn't know what to expect, and the premise seems sort of cheesy, but I consider it a good find. The narration takes us into the heads, hearts and incredibly sordid pasts of the 7 castaways of Gilligan's Island, and with it, into the head, heart and sordid history of 20th Century America.
No, it doesn't tell us how they all ended up on the island-- it tells us how they ended up at some of the most significant, often top secret, events in our recent history... and it is not what you'd expect.
