The book provides an interesting and highly detailed description of the developement of the tunnel complexes, how they were used by the VC, and US efforts to counter them. The book is effective in that it remains relatively neutral describing the ingenuity of the VC (use of animals as traps/warning; concerts in the tunnels; jury rigging equipment (such as tubes from mines for surgical operations)) but also the bravery of the US Tunnel Rats. The author makes it clear that much of the US efforts were unsuccessful, but that does not diminish the efforts of the US soldiers who fought in the tunnels. ...less

It is books like this that make me wish there was also a half star option, as I would have rated this 2.5 stars. Overall the book is mediocre. The plot is not especially original, the pacing is often slow and then speeds up only to slow down again...I also thought it was overly long, somewhat bloated--some aggressive editing would have made this a much tighter, better book. Also the author really needs to do is home work, I do not know if he has ever served in the military/DoD, but from this book it appears he has not.
I did not rate this lower for a couple reasons:
--Characters--while the characters at times come across as somewhat self important (or at least the author thinks they are best at everything--though he only tells us and does not often show us) --there seemed to be some thought into their personalities and an effort to make the more nuanced.
--Plot--was somewhat unoriginal, but the author recognizes the need no matter how complicated to bring down to a straightforward issue at the climax.
Other reviewers have said other Reacher novels are better. While this was less than great, based on their recommendations and the (somewhat) promise, this book shows, I may check out another one sometime in the future. ...less
