The Death of Napoleon by Simon Leys. A "what-if" senario, beautifully-written, poetic, spare. This award-winning novel is now a wonderful movie.

I loved Abundance, as well (and Ahab's Wife). Before reading the novel, I'd thought of M.A. as a somewhat boring person. She's now more three-dimensional.
