This is the first collection in this series that I read, finding a copy in my father-in-law's library. It completely pulled me in, prompting me to seek out the previous volumes. This one is probably my favorite of the lot.

Continuing in my quest to actually read some classic literature that I skipped over before. This is my first Dickens and so far, so good.

I'm such a fan of James Whale's film that it's probably not surprising that I didn't like the book as much. It's not as solid as War of the Worlds, but a quick read. Those not married to Claude Rains' depiction should enjoy it.

Another entertaining summer read. It's pretty fun, but I'm not so keen on Tom Sawyer's appearance. I'm also not so sure Nick Cave ever actually read the thing, though "Saint Huck" remains one of my favorite tunes by him. The character is much smarter and sharper about the ways of people than the tragic protagonist of the song.

I've embarked on a journey to read some classic literature that I ignored the first time around, starting with this one. It's a very entertaining read, barring the fact that it takes place during the time of slavery. I can also see where Walt Kelly got his inspiration for phonetic southern dialogue in the Pogo strip.

More nicely-paced western short stories, which in turn inspired some films, though I'm reluctant to seek out the flicks. Some of the tales in this series are so well done, I question whether the movies (many of which were made in the 30s and 40s) could convey the same thrills.

Having never read (or had much desire to read) any western fiction, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed these stories. Very well written, tense, suspenseful stories.
