The Boneshaker of the title is a mining device that figures largely in the background, but not the events, of this story. Invented to access gold beneath the ice, the Boneshaker instead destroyed a part of Seattle and released an unknown gas that transformed those who fell victim to it into zombie-like Rotters. The ravaged area and the victims were enclosed in walls to keep the blight from spreading.

Sixteen years after this disaster the inventor's teenage son Zeke ventures into the ruined area looking for evidence to exonerate his father. When his mother Briar realizes that he is in danger she goes after him, facing zombies, drug-dealers, mad scientists and other dangers to save her son. The two encounter an array of colorful characters and must sort lies from truth to find one another again.

Briar and Zeke were both believable and sympathetic characters, and the people setting, and larger world-building were interesting and imaginative. I could see more adventures occurring in this alternate history. The one serious weakness that kept grating on me as I read was that the author never convincingly explains why so many people continue to live in the blighted area where they face constant deprivation and danger. In most similar novels this issue is handled in one of two ways: 1) There has been a fairly universal apocalypse and there is nowhere better to go. 2) Some outside force (the government, alien forcefields, etc) has created a barrier and keeps the people trapped inside it (because they are mutants, or exposed to a disease, or as a punishment). In this case it is relatively easy to get in and out of the city, and we are told that quite a few people come and go, usually to obtain drugs. So why doesn't everyone else leave? (less)

A friend of mine nabbed this at the Goodwill and gave it to me since I have a Basenji mix. It's a good guide about how to care for your Basenji, and other dogs for that matter, as well as a history of the breed and a guide to their quirks. It woud have been an invaluable resource ten years ago when I first got Belle but it still contains a lot of good info.

A precocious and unhappy teen chases after a piece of note paper and ends up at the entrance exam for Brakebills College. Quentin makes it through and matriculates into an exclusive magical college he never knew existed. His time at college is my favorite part of the book--the descriptions of finger exercises and relentless memorization and meditation are excellently done. Grossman really gets the mindset of overachieving perfectionists. Eventually, Quentin and his friends graduate and live lives of selfish hedonism in New York. The college pays for everything, and their magical abilities make everything seem possible--to the extent that nothing seems that important. Just when they are really falling apart, they find a way into Fillory, the world's equivalent of Narnia. The group cautiously makes their way into a world they thought was fictional.

The plot and themes of this novel are absolutely great. This is one of the very rare mature looks at a magical school. I was particularly impressed by Grossman's nuanced take on how people respond to the fantasies of their childhood come to life. BUT. I hated Quentin. I hated him so, so much I could hardly get through the book. He is a privileged, entitled, selfish jackass, and following him around as he whines his way through adventures is excrutiating. He is Holden Caulfield, but smarter and even less empathic. He is every self-important, self-involved, overly-educated rich white boy I ever hated. If this book were about Alice, who was raised by two magicians so powerful that their very home is in a constant state of flux, or Eliot, who alternates between Oscar Wilde and Sebastian Flyte, it would be excellent. As it is, I was so frustrated with this novel that even though it contains some of the best writing about magic that I've ever read, I almost gave up on it. (less)

Moorcock is one of my favorites. I have the Nomad of Time but haven't read it yet. Bastable appears again in some of the later Elric books.

It was so neat to read some that was written in the 70's and compare it with the steampunk genre today. This is the first book in a 3-novel volume i'm reading about Oscar Bastable called The Nomad of Time, if you have a more recently published copy, it is now called The Nomad of the Time Streams.
Moorcock's story, if it wasn't for the fantastical aspects, very much reminded me of George Orwell actually, in the way it covered British colonization, imperialism in general and war. Set in an alternative history where life is similar to ours but some inventions have been created earlier and some not at all. Some cameos from people whoare suposed to represent- Mick Jagger, Lenin and Ronald Reagan as a childish, tempermental Boy Scout Troup leader. This was my first Moorcock book and i will be reading more; it is extremely well-written in my opinion. Great book- air ships, time travel, and he's good at describing the mundane and making it great..(less)
