I wish I had liked this novel better because a friend lent it to me.

It was a quick read but the characters were very two dimensional and I never felt for their plight (seeing strange things in an old house and a creepy ex-tenant).

There were at least two major grammatical errors that jumped out at me. Wrong verb tenses and the like also irked me.

This novel was written in the 70s, so maybe that explains it.

If you like animals, don't read this book.

There are at least 3 scenes where animals suffer and I skipped over the awfulness. If the rest of the book wasn't so engrossing, I would have stopped reading at the first one.

The novel almost put me off at the get-go due to its format: correspondence between all the characters. But it was done so skillfully that I kept going. I'm glad I did.

This was a side of WWII that I had no idea about (granted, I didn't know much to begin with).

The characters on Guernsey Island are fascinating, lovable, and entertaining. The drama is enticing.

This novel made me want to visit Guernsey. Of course it can't be like the novel portrays it, but it sure sounded lovely.

Sharon Shinn is one of my favorite authors and I love the other novels in the Thirteenth House series. This one, however, did not pique my interest as much.

The main character is likable, but the events that happen in this novel are slow and take a long time to build to something exciting. Even the fight scenes felt stilted and slow and didn't make me feel a part of the action.

I did enjoy the budding relationship between Wen and her employer. It was those intentionally deliberate, detailed scenes that made this book readable.

Shinn is a great writer but even great writers can't be 100% all the time.

Marian Keyes is one of my favorite authors. She writes novels that probably are called "chick lit" but are so well done and include weighty topics like drug and domestic abuse (like this novel) that calling her books by that term is annoying.

Plus, she's hilarious. I know, sounds weird for novels with those types of content, but Keyes does it excellently. I can't think of one of her novels that hasn't made me laugh out loud.

This novel is one of the really good ones. Watermelon is fantastic, too. Somehow Keyes knows just how to get the feelings we all feel down perfectly.

I just wish she would write faster so I can keep reading her stuff.

I found this oldie but goody in my bookshelves. I was waiting for some library books to come in and read this in the interim. It is a fantastic alternate history of Louis XIV's court with sea monsters and the Pope!

There's a reason this won a Nebula award. It's that good.
