A little difficult to read because the entries are scattered across years and sources--a bit like reading a portfolio of work (e.g., poems, diary entries, drawings, letters, etc.), but a very interesting young woman who compels you to take life a little more seriously. This book is a memoir of a young woman who was killed by a bulldozer in Gaza at 23 wen she was serving as a nonviolent peace activist and human rights observer. Her family put the book together after her death, in memory. ...less

I read this on my spring break and I stayed up until the early hours of the morning reading because I really got into the story. I became interested in this author because she used to be a man and is a professor at Colby College. I knew about the author for quite some time, but only now got to reading something she had written. She is a good writer and the story is very compelling. It is autobiographical, mostly centering on her childhood in this crazy haunted house--you are left wondering whether it was haunted or the young boy was haunted by his future self....very interesting story!...less

This book was heartbreaking in that it is about the author losing her husband, who she had spent every day with for years upon years of their relationship. This of course happened when their only daughter was in a coma and near death herself. It was interesting to read about that year after her husband's death and Joan Didion is a well-known author--it made me want to read her books. I also got a kick out of her connection to both NYC and Los Angeles. I like books that involve cities or locations almost as if they are characters themselves. ...less

I am nearly finished this book, but I ended up putting it down when I picked up another book to read. Reading this book puts what it means to be a woman today in context with what it has meant to be a woman in the past. This is a very compelling book and a great read if you are interested in considering what it means to be a woman. ...less
