Of course this is very topical and the lingo of the book is specially crafted to make you think of the western soldiers fighting in the current afghan campaign.
Still afghanistan is where empires go to get the snot kicked out of them.

Hard to judge this book apart from the whole controversy. Then again how accurate can the memoirs of a druggie be anyway? It conveys the feel of a drugs habit very well so you can read it as some type of essential truth book.

Who has not read this in High School?
But you should then go on to read 'Farewell to Catalonia' and 'Down and out in Paris and London' to get a feel for the origin of this book. Esp Spanish civil war was very formative.
