A Tom Sawyer Huck Finn kind of story starring adults this time around. Taking place in the late 1800's, early 1900's in the American West, this is a story of personal transition and reflected during a time of great change in the country as well. While there are shootings, I would not describe this as a "shoot 'em up" story but more a quiet yarn taking the reader to this time and place on a human emotion level. I have read elsewhere that at least one of the characters (the Pinkerton) was factual. Otherwise, I think the young family and their quiet neighbor with a mysterious past are totally fictional. Everyone is growing, changing, seeking self or redemption. I enjoyed it, and would recommend it to women who are ready to step out of the box a bit and enjoy the storytelling of a more evolved cowboy than you might expect, or to fans of the western genre....less

"A fast read about a quirky town and its mostly dysfunctional inhabitants in Newfounland. The characters are likeable enough to keep on reading. I enjoyed the writing and liked the continuing thread about the young man's passion for birds.

The sperm whale, what an amazing animal! And man's interaction with it even more so. Colonial American whaling seems to have been overshadowed by the more popular whaling era in the mid 1800's. I am amazed at the whole proposition of chasing a leviathan in a tiny boat (no matter what decade) and have read many books, fiction and non fiction, on the subject. In other books I found no or little mention of the importance of whaling during our country's beginnings but this one has a lot of good information for colonial times. Presented in an historic yet fun tone, the reading is easy. This book is corroborating and expanding on other readings in a human way...lots of good quotes. Starting with shore whaling, to nearby offshore whaling, to longer voyages, I like getting the whole picture of how and why this unlikely pursuit began. My view of this time in our history is getting a new dimension. So far it is quite the yarn; I would recommend. ...less

I just started reading this a couple days ago and have been lost since page one. So much so, I thought I might be coming down with the flu. But based on reviews from goodreads members, I will start over and hope I can mind-meld with what to me is a chaotic style of writing...can't seem to get grounded....less

its really hard to believe that mr. boyle lives anywhere near the US/Mexico border. His portrait of the subject is trite, ham-fisted and overly simplified.
In the world of the tortilla curtain, being a liberal means that you recycle. In the world of the tortilla curtain, being hispanic means you are either unbelievably downtrodden and unlucky or you're carrying a knife and willing to use it.
early in the novel, the protagonist hits a hispanic man with his car. when he goes to see if the man is ok, the hispanic man responds in some wicked, foreign tongue, and we're treated to a passage along the lines of: "this man wasnt speaking norwegian...no, the US doesnt share a three-thousand mile border with Norway. No...this man was Mexican, and the langue he was speaking....Spanish." I dont remember the exact passage but its something along those lines. I remembered it because it was so laughably horrible. Good lord.
Really, this book is just awful. It seems to be a favorite of quasi-literary middled aged house wife book clubs though...so, whatever, read whatever you want.
