I haven't done a review for any of the books in this series yet (even though I've read all five of them this year), so here goes:

The setting is 2079/2080 (2080 for book 5). It's both futuristic and alternative reality where people with psychic powers and others who are animal shifters exist alongside humans in our society. Back in 1969 a program called "Silence" was instigated to condition young Psy to reduce the number of Psy who become insane or serial killers. The aim of "Silence" was to repress the emotion of rage, but it quickly became realized that it was impossible to inhibit ONLY rage, therefore the new mission of "Silence" was to repress all emotion in every Psy across the world. It was a resounding success. Now, in 2079 - five or six generations after Silence was instituted, the Psy have forgotten that they've ever been anything else. They are the leaders of government and business, eclipsing both humans and changelings with their ruthless control and efficiency.

The first book introduces us to the Psy Council and to the DarkRiver leopard changeling pack of San Francisco, CA. Over the course of the five books we meet other Psy and more of the DarkRiver clan and the surrounding other changeling clans (especially a wolf clan and a rat clan).

Book 5 Hostage to Pleasure is about Dorian, a DarkRiver sniper with latent changing abilities. In other words, he has the leopard tendancies, but has never been able to actually shift. He holds a brutal rage in his heart toward the Psy, who years earlier tortured and murdered his little sister.

Dorian is charged with the protection of Ashaya, apparently the perfect Psy - cool, calm, emotionless - at least on the outside. Inside, Ashaya is fighting a desperate battle to keep her son safe and free them both from the PsyNet.

While the story could theoretically stand alone, I would highly recommend reading the series in order to obtain the additional background of the secondary characters and the relationship between the Psy and the Changelings.

- The Sazi series by C.T. Adams & Cathy Clamp
- Feline Breeds series by Lora Leigh
- The Others series by Christine Warren...less "
