As some other reviewers mentioned, Abnett captures the scope of the 41st Millennium Imperium really well. The plot stretches over several hundred years and God-Emperor knows how many light years. All that with the core characters remaining the same and that not looking unusual. He also does a good job of portraying the constant warfare that plagues the Imperium - even outside the battlefields, and on planets supposedly safe from direct Chaos invasion.

Overall, the series feels less dramatic than the Gaunt's Ghost series, maybe that's because the "drama factor" rises progressively towards the end of the series, instead of remaining relatively constant. As usual, Abnett does an awesome job on characters, and, as usual, when things go horribly wrong for them, you just can't shake the feeling that they do not deserve it. But then, it's the 41st Millennium, and there's no happy endings there.

I just love the way Abnett uses fictional languages. Especially Glossia, which is simply beautiful - even if it's not as unbreakable as Eisenhorn claims.(less) "
