Damn, West Division street sure is different from what it was in
the post-WWII era. I like to think of the characters from this
book robbing the condo-dwelling, stroller-pushing breeders who live there now blind.
This took some time to dig into, but once I finished the first 100 pages I was really taken by Algren's brilliance for dialogue and dark comedy. He sets a scene (mid-20th century Polish ghetto in Chicago) that is foreign to most, then convincingly lures you in through his all-too-real descriptions of the filthy
streets and in-depth portrayals of his characters, who he treats with the perfect amount of sympathy and affection.
