I so want to love this book. I really do. And the simplest message from it I wish I could live more fully. I'm trying. I don't want to be cynical. But I guess I am ~ I don't know if it's the style or the (lack of) substance, but this one's just too cheesy for me. The message doesn't penetrate. Superficial. More than 30 years later, I can still identify quite a bit with the Morocco this author describes ... the community of a single neighborhood with all of its sisterhood, hospitality, competition, fears and celebrations. I didn't remember Theroux being quite this crotchety in his previous travels ~ has he grown older, or have my interpretations changed? He finds much to love, among places and people, on his route from Cairo to Cape Town, but he doesn't spare his tongue in haranguing global aid for contributing to, rather than alleviating, Africa's many developmental problems.
