I think the best way to understand George R.R. Martin is to understand a little of his interest and what he wanted to do with the books. Orginally he wanted to write a fictional/historical series of books about the War of the Roses. The political and war stories in the Song of Ice and Fire reflected that horrible time in English history. The War of the Roses is just calamity upon calamity. Innocent people died right and left, horrible people prospered only to die violently as well. I would not have read a series based on the War of the Roses because I know enough about the time period to realize I wouldnt enjoy the mayhem.
As George started outlining the War of the Roses series he started thinking of another storyline of a fantasy series based on fighting the Others. As I understand it, publishers told him that a War of the Roses series would not do well on the market so he drafted in the War of the Roses story with the story of the Others. As a result I think we have several interesting stories...Bran, John and Arya and some not so interesting storylines...everyone else. I am tired and somewhat bored with the "War of the Roses" storyline and I really only care about the interesting story of the Others (Bran and John). Problem is George really loves the "War of the Roses" storyline. The Feast of Crows was not orginally planned for the series because it didnt move the general story forward. George decided to write it anyway because it was more of what he had drafted in the orginal War of the Roses series.
I am afraid if he doesnt get on with the interesting story, the Others, he will lose me as a reader. I can only read so many pages of senseless death and destruction before I am out. BTW if he is true to the War of the Roses storyline Denery or the imp will win out...has to be someone long removed from England ...sorry Westeros that then invades and conquers.
Not my ending of choice but I will wade through it for the Others storyline.
