I got this sent to me used, from a bookseller in Florida, who acquired it from the UK. The pages are pretty dingy and the book smells very strongly of incense or patchouli oil. Inside the book was a lovely hand printed greeting card that said, I think, in very messy writing, "Wishing you a Happy Birthday. Love, Ma X."

All of this is adding considerably to the enjoyment and mystery of reading this book. All the sights, smells, and maternal communications add to the feeling of being in another's subconscious, and seeing all the symbols present in his or her dreams. They, as all symbols probably are, feel universal and primitive and powerful (foreign land, travel over water, dirt, earth smells, mother, birth, hand-made offerings).

I now hold clues about two people's inner lives and how they are manifested in the external world: the author's and the previous owner's. All and all, a very heady and trippy way to read a memoir, man.

This was really inspiring for me to read. She is inventive, innovative, humorous, and poetic. She writes about motherhood, daughterhood, work, neighbors, age, dying, the things of this world in an out-of-this-world way. Some of her short stories are so brief and so efficient, they are like poetry.

She moved a block for me in my own writing and thinking about short fiction. I know I am the queen* of telling and not showing in my attempts at reviews on this site, so sorry that you have to learn way more about how I feel as opposed to how the book manages to do all that I claim.

I would suggest reading this interview with Ms. Davis from an issue of, "The Believer," that was out a few years ago: http://www.believermag.com/issues/200801...

*=I don't know who died to make the queen of this. I haven't had a chance to read the obituaries closely since we stopped getting the paper.
