In Shibumi, Trevanian (pen name for Dr. Rodney William Whitaker)created a super spy to end all super spies, one Nicholai Hel, a man without country, literally, who was raised by a Japanese Go master. Hel is a genius, a mystic, a master of language and culture, and is the world's most proficient assassin; yet by contrast, he also aspires to the oriental state of ultimate contentment and peace--shibumi. While serious on one hand, the book is also a satire and is filled with pointed humor. Shibumi was written in 1979 in part to spoof the ultra-hero characters popular in fiction at the time--think James Bond. In reading Shibumi, I was revisiting an old friend. I'd read the book just after it was published and had thoroughly enjoyed it. This time around, some 30 years later, I still enjoyed the book, but found it far too sexual and earthy. Nicholai Hel is not just a skilled assassin, but he is skilled in the art of making love. What would you expect from a man who is good at everything? ...less

I found some very insightful, encouraging thoughts in Dr. Dyer's book. He believes in the Law of Attraction, which in essence dictates that we draw to ourselves what we think about. While I'm not sure I learned anything that stood out as sparkling and new, it was a great reminder that we should live with and through the Light of Christ. That by doing so we live in joy and contentment and spread that joy to others. Dr. Dyer, of course, doesn't say it like that, he being more than a bit of a New Age guru, but that is what I got out of the book. ...less

I have to admit that this was not my favorite Odd Thomas book. I'm still glad I read it. I really like the character of "old one." But I think there were some hasty plot decisions that took away from the overall feel to the book. Even still I enthusiastically await the next in the series. Odd Hours left me with lots of questions that still need to be answered, in particular: Who exactly is Annamaria? And why does she expect Odd Thomas to be so patient for her answers when she told Blossom everything after only knowing her for a few hours. Kinda makes you go...Hmmmmmmm... I probably would have given this a 3 1/2-star rating if it were available. ...less

Every time I read this book I find insights I hadn't found before. And every time I've finished it, I've had a sweet assurance that it is true, that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, and that he translated The Book of Mormon as inspired of God. And most especially, as I read The Book of Mormon, my faith in and knowledge of the Savior is enhanced and strengthened. ...less
