I could sympathize with the need to forge ahead for your child, to protect, to remember, to teach. Normally grammatically incorrect prose bothers me, but it works here. Skeletal scene, skeletal characters, skeletal writing. And in those missing apostrophes and quotation marks and descriptions were the weight of things unsaid in the man's, and the boy's, heart. But I still felt them. In a handful of words, McCarthy vividly captures the essence of the story. In the end, I got a little teary-eyed, but I don't think I was sad as much as touched by the hope, the love, the perseverance of the human spirit. (less) "
