No complaints about the beautiful form of this perfectly executed book, but if we are going to take graphic novels seriously, that means a fair critique of their quality as novels. The protagonist of Aterios Polyp is an arrogant professor of architecture, obsessed by dualistic models of the universe. Are we still not done beating up this straw man? Still humiliating these characters and setting them up against wise, beautiful mystics and multi-culturalists?
One of the theses of this novel (integral to its narrative, but also awesomely realized in the drawings) is explicitly stated: "What if reality (as perceived) were simply an extension of the self?" A tidy deconstruction designed to tear down the pretensions of the all-to-confident Asterios, but it predictably leads to a pomo-emo worldview that prizes the multiplicity of individual perceptions over the extra- and inter-subjectivity of social life. Missing here is the essential correlative of the question: What if THE SELF (as perceived) were simply an extension of REALITY?
BTW, not since Beavis and Butthead have characters been drawn so consistently facing in the same direction all the time! Asterios is ALWAYS in profile!(less)

This book is quite good and I think deserves all the buzz it's gotten. Mazzucchelli knows how to make comics, and this book really pushes the form in interesting ways. Took me a while to spot that the lettering for each character's dialogue was rendered in a different writing. Very cool.

But as a piece of narrative? Man, there is a move late in the story that almost ruins it for me, the kind of plot move you'd have a hard time forgiving in a short story by a college freshman. I don't want to give away any spoilers, and maybe someone who's read it can help me see the move as deeper than it appears. And yes I know it's foreshadowed earlier in the piece. But so what? If anything, that makes it worse.

In the end, this book, like some other hyped graphic novels I've read recently (Mother Come Home, Bottomless Belly Button) ultimately left me a little disappointed, as it was interesting as a comic, formally, and used the comics medium to push the way a story gets told, but the story itself? Not all that deep or rich, or even free of cliches, which when compared to excellent comics making and story telling by folks like Chris Ware or the Hernandez Brother, well, you get what I'm saying.

But damn, it looks gorgeous on the page.
