i had mixed feelings overall. she makes some really good points about the split between biomedical psychiatry and psychoanalysis, but although it was published in 2000 a lot of her work was in the 90s and is now outdated... there are also sections that basically explain how to become a psychiatrist, which obviously was a little boring for me.
on the other hand, her prose is just excellent -- she has a surefooted clarity that makes one feel that things one inherently knows are more firmly true now that they are phrased so well. and there are glimmers of brilliant commentary about what its like to train and work in psych -- in the end it was really worth the 45 pages of boring to hit the ingenious moments of resonance. i definitely want to read her other work that is NOT about my work :)

This book felt a little like young adult fiction, though not in a bad way, but had enough momentum to keep me reading and I read it in just a few days. The end has a twist that is predictable in category but not in specifics, and overall it's an enjoyable amalgamation of a sortof commonplace ghost story with what turns out to be a kindof horrifying what-really-happens-in-American-towns story.

Despite heavy-handed prose, excessively esoteric references and a complete lack of trajectory, this book really made me want to keep reading. It's some type of non-reality - I think it is somewhere between magical realism and surrealism. It's definitely a unique subject matter (Capgras syndrome) and is done in a flow-of-consciousness way that can get confusing but also has momentum. I recommend for anyone who is interested in this type of disease.
