Like Stephenie Meyer's Bella Swan, Laurie Halse Anderson's Melinda appeared to her in a startling dream. The startling dream compelled her to write this book which has been captured on film and rereleased in a glossy platinum addition. I am wracking my brain for what fodder exists in my dreamlife, but NOTHING. I will never be a YA starlet.

SPEAK is what my librarian pal calls "an issue novel." It chronicles a year in the life of Melinda, a depressed tween who recedes into the background of freshman year. She fails classes; she can't relate; she's limp with suburban ennui. She is all but mute. We know early on she is burying something, and that something is pretty obvious (especially if you peek at the catalog info for the Library of Congress). It feels strange to treat this as a mystery, but I suppose it is true to trauma and how a person pulls away.

This is decent YA fare. It echos this old fave: Life Without Friends.

And remember, despite what this genre purports, we can't all blossom! Sometimes the ugly duckling becomes an ugly duck!
I first want to clarify that The Neverending Story is my favorite movie, period. Its textural, sparkling/swampy aesthetics; the child actors' performances;the puppetry and luminous matte paintings; especially the unrelenting misery the protagonist, Atreyu, suffers. The film greatly influenced me in various ways, and I am very glad this book was written so that it could exist. I wish I could say I enjoyed both the novel and its film adaptation equally. Alas!

Naturally, I've been curious about the novel for a while and recently needing a good dose of escapism, I sought it out. Perhaps my current state of mind contributed to my gloomy reading experience, but I just can't decide whether or not I actually enjoyed Michael Ende's fantasy epic. And it is EPIC. The movie only covers the first half of the book and ends in a really satisfying way: Bastian, having saved Fantasia ("Fantastica" in Ralph Manheim translation of the book) from certain destruction brought on by the Nothing,is rewarded with limitless wishes and a bully-chasing joy ride on Falkor the Luck Dragon. Cue Limahl. The end.

The second half of the book is all about Bastian's adventures in Fantastica. Bastian's first wish transform him from a chubby little boy into a handsome, all powerful prince in Arabian garb. From there, I lost my ability to relate to him. He creates and interacts with a wide variety of creatures and landscapes (all very imaginative and very weird-not the standard dragons and unicorns fare), which is enjoyable, and he is put through various trials, but I'm not interested in supermen. Bastian is fearless, possesses super-strength,and wields an unstoppable sword. There aren't enough limitations, and I kept wondering if there was going to be anymore conflict. There is! It's soul crushing!

Bastian continues making wishes at the expense of his memories, becomes arrogant and friendless, and wanders from land to land in search of what he REALLY wants. The story ends beautifully, made me want to hug my dad, and essentially satisfies, but I'm still not sure how I feel about it. Did I actually like it? I think so. I wish the characters were explored more deeply, and fantastic descriptions and origin stories don't necessarily make characters sympathetic. Also-I wish the Artax death scene lasted longer. I want my heart strings tugged, dammit. In the long run, I might have liked this book a lot more (loved it, even?) if I had been in a better mood when reading it. Like The Bell Jar, I caution against reading Michael Ende's Neverending Story when depressed. Watch the movie instead. (less)

Last year I read Blue Light, an amazing story from this collection. In the story "a topman is mastered by the witchcraft of a blue light that first traps him, then dismembers him, and finally allows him to be entered like a woman." I have such high hopes!

Ack, I just realized my current writing project prominently features the much weaker "witchcraft of a GREEN light"!!! Derivative or in conversation? You decide.

The Lover is the story of a clandestine love affair between a French tween and a wealthy Chinese gentleman in French colonial Vietnam. There are quite a few black limo scenes. It is nice and plot-lite.

The writing in this tome is top notch. Duras relays the story in episodes and the episodes appear out of sequence. They are linked as memories are linked--through association. Think temporal connect the dots. The result is something kaleidoscopic and haunted and spare.

It is a lovely little book, and not a terrible thing to turn to when life feels impossible and/or star-crossed.

It is clear that I need to start a shelf for fictionalized memoirs by tore-up French voluptuaries. Pronto!
