So far I'm finding it interesting, if not a little pompous. I think it's wonderful that the writer has such a firm grasp on vocabularly, I'm sure she aced the verbal part of the GRE. And it's kind of fun reading the descriptions of people and how she annotates them.
I like the quirkyness of the main character Blue. But I'm intimidated by her intelligence. At times I also feel slightly insulted because I'm not more like her - I'm too giggly, girly, interested in things other than just books. Sometimes her descriptions of people who aren't like her are almost a slap in the face, as if those of us who aren't as smart as Blue couldn't possibly contribute anything to the world.
I think I feel this way because this is how the staff is treated by most of our faculty. We're not PhDs and therefore our opinions, thoughts, our lives even are just not worthy of their attention or time (unless it relates to their money).
But we'll see...I'm suckered in and enjoying it anyway. ...less

I've been reading this book since the Fall when my mom sent it to me originally.
It's almost as if I read the book only when the universe/God wants me to understand something about myself. This is truly one of those books that can help you change your life or just propel your life forward a bit more.
I started practicing prayer and meditation back in September of 2007 as part of an over-all quest to improve both my physical and mental health. My mom sent Eat, Pray, Love to inspire me on my journey.
The book has been well read, dog eared, entries highlighted, and notes made out to the side. It's definitely a book I need to go back and reread and practice more of what Elizabeth is sharing, what she has been taught.
This is a book of hope and enlightenment. I don't think you have to be a Hindu or a Buddist to take the lessons that Liz share in this book and use them. I'm a Christian woman and I find that meditating brings me closer to Christ.
I would like to go to an Ashram some day. And i would like to have a guru. I just wonder if I'm ready for the challenge....less

What an interesting novel. Sarah had to point out to me how it is a metaphor of the Nazi's and the concentration camps. I read it totally at face value. I just wasn't interested in looking for metaphors.
I like the sociological aspects of the story: how the people react to being locked into their town; how other people use the plague to their advantage while their neighbors suffer; how others realize that the only thing to really do is fight the plague and it's effects.
I love the characters Tarrou and Rieux the most. Both to me are such wonderful men. They both represent the good of all people. I kept thinking that it must be a real honor to have been each other's friend. Tarrou keeps Rieux going and Rieux offers a sounding board for Tarrou.
The priest was a bit scary, although I do believe that God uses the ills of the world to call us to look inward and upward. I don't necessarily agree with his first sermon about how the town deserved the plague, that's too much for me. After Noah's flood, God promised to never do that again. And it's been my belief that God has a way of reaching out to us through less severe means. BUT that in times of flood, draught, hurricanes, plague, we need to turn to God, ask Him to help us find the peace in the situation.
That's the part that Tarrou got. He understood that even if he didn't outright say it. He realized that in this crisis, the people need to come together and work for the betterment of the community. In the New Testament, Jesus is always telling the people to care for each other, to love each other, to look out for the people who don't have as much as we do. I think this is what the priest finally came to realize as well....less
