It took a few chapters for me to really sink into this book, but Im glad I stayed with it. At first the flow of language was a bit distracting, but it either smoothed out as the novel progressed, or I simply got used to it. Either way, I was committed.
I liked the way it played between case-study (the story of Lazarus and his sister - both told from afar), and the narrator's journey (told from the first person). The parallels are many, most obviously the immigrant journey. Immigrant stories are many, but I appreciated the modern feel of this one especially in comparison to Lazarus's historical one.
The stories were simultaneously moving, confounding, and appalling. The perspective was touching. The ending will surprise you. Or maybe not. Read it and find out.
My boyfriend is Bosnian and Im also personally interested in his perspective about the culture and immigrating to America in relation to Hemon's....less

Read this book in 2 days while in Munich. Very easy read and quite interesting! I learned a lot about midwifery and also the origins of the vibrator! Which, I know, sounds ridiculous, but it was interesting. And Dora is a lovely character. Would be great beach reading or for a book club (i know those 2 things do not always go together, but in this case it applies).
I also have several recommended books from the author notes at the back of the book. Looking forward to some more summer reading....less

I really enjoyed this book. It took about 50 pages to really get into, but then I was hooked. If you enjoyed The Historian, you will probably enjoy this. This is not quite in the same league, but it has a similar feel and was certainly enjoyable. A literary mystery is always appealing to me.
The next book by the author has me VERY intrigued as it is an art mytery - centering on paintings instead of literature.

I really enjoyed this book. The way in which Coelho tells the story is an interesting one and it kept me engaged. I also appreciated that I didn't necessarily "like" these characters, especially when I can't help identifying with parts of each of them. I appreciate being challenged in that way.
There is an intensity about the narrative that I also liked and it was interesting to see the energy start to get a bit out of control before being wrapped up in the end.
I can't decide whether I liked the ending or not, but I think that's the beautiful thing about it. I was surprised by the ending (always good), and like that I feel a bit unresolved about the outcome. It ties in perfectly with Athena's journey....less
