fantastically bitter humour. christopher moore's skewed perspective of the world and the people in it makes for stories that are hard to put down, and even harder to stop yourself from laughing out loud. i love his habit of depositing characters from other books in for cameos. It lends a sense of credibility to his world and all of the bizarre occurances in it.

i'd read/had this book read to me by my mother when i was young. i'm not entirely sure at what specific age. i recently ordered my own copy and found the story applicable as more of a universal truth than just one that applies only to those of the christian faith. i ordered it more for the illustrations than the writings. i'm definitely glad to have a copy, both for sentimental reasons and for the wisdom contained in it. the story is simply told, but the struggles that christian endures can be compared to those of every man or woman who is yearning to improve themselves and their lives by following a more ethical moral code.

strong and chilling. to portray genocide as much more than a frenzied mob mentality makes us consider what we will allow our society to get away with while we excuse it because &quot;everyone else is doing it&quot;. as a sheltered american i'm always shocked and often appalled at what is happening in other areas of the globe with little or no interference from other nations/u.n. its always frightening how willing people are to go along with something that no human could possibly justify, just because a government mandates it.

the absolute best book i've ever read. wallace is an undeniable genius. the amount of research he must've put into it during the three years it took to create it makes me wonder how he possibly maintained his sanity. the characters are wild and more complete than people i know in real life. his ability to capture you with so many entirely different and seemingly completely unrelated stories makes it so much more satisfying when you can finally decipher their relations to one another. his lexicon alone is staggering. i found this book entirely at random in a public library by walking down an aisle with my finger outstretched (eyes closed), and, while i'm entirely unsuperstitious, i firmly feel as though divine providence directed me to this book. this book makes me feel like steve martin at the end of &quot;the jerk&quot;. all i need is this book... and maybe some water... and some waffles... and get fuzzy.

hell, i read it over and over. every time i've picked it up i figure out more about each character and the fucked up things that have happened to them. i can't believe someone threw it away. :( <br/>wallace is a genius. i don't have any theories about it, but it's funny, and tragic, and challenging, and frustrating all at once. i doubt i'll ever stop reading it, or any of his other works.
