"I got a lovely 1934 illustrated edition at a library sale for $2. And only now do I realize that it only contains volume one. Sigh. (Now I'll have to go and find an ebook version, which really isn't hard at all. But I do wish I had more pictures.)" Nov 13, 2012 11:56pm

Captain Cupid Calls the Shots by Elisabeth Fairchild
The heroine was far too much of a martyr for my tastes, and her reasons for her actions didn't even make sense. (view spoiler)[So, she pretends the village strumpet's child is hers so that she won't grow up with the stigma of being the village strump...more

I felt a lot more sympathy for the hero, even if he was remarkably dense. His best friend decides to abandon him without warning or talking over it at all, all because she's in love with him but doesn't want him to know. But his lack of awareness abo...more

The characters' actions seemed rather unnatural at times, as if they acted a certain way because the author felt they should for the sake of the story, but didn't feel organic to the situation/character. They overreacted to situations that barely see...more

Forever & Ever by Patricia Gaffney
This book was kind of traumatizing to read. The characters would be blissfully happy, then extremely miserable, then happy, the miserable again, over and over. And so it was very emotional, but by the end I was sort of wondering if the author really...more

This book was rather odd and certainly improbably, but still enjoyable for all that. The other men were rather obnoxious and flat, but they're other men, so how else are they supposed to be?

The heroine's name bothered me. Thanks to the Bronte sisters, Bronte is, to me, definitely a last name. As a first name it looks odd. (Apparently it was one of the top 100 female names in Australia in 2000-2001, but this book is set in 1858.)

I definitely enjoyed this book. I really need to start reading more fantasy romances - I'd forgotten how much I liked them.
