The only upside is that the characters don't go by seven different names- Dosteovsky style. I borrowed this from the library 5 weeks ago, but I continue to renew it in an effort not to give up. It's getting harder as I find bookmarks abandoned by readers' previous attempts. I'm starting to judge the previous readers' failure to finish by what they were using as bookmarks. The first one I found was part of a folded up class syllabus. It's only page 27 so I'm guessing this person jumped directly to some cliff notes. The second bookmark I found was a tag from a pair of men's trendy jeans. A smaller waist size- so I assume this is a hipster who is reading this (possibly in a coffeehouse, definitely in public) to impress others. He has also given up. As I get closer to throwing in the towel, I'm realizing I can't judge these people. After all, I read the first few chapters of this in a Starbucks (subconsciously on purpose I swear) in plain view of others, and I chose the book in the first place based on a passing reference by a guy who I had a crush on for about a week. So really I'm no better.(less)

I liked it, and I like Frey's voice, but the one thing I truly hated about this was the lack of punctuation. The style worked for the thoughts going through an addict's head (A Million Little Pieces). It makes NO sense 98% of the time in this book, though. I saw him in NYC and he addressed the issue, saying he writes the way he speaks. But it's like, dude. You don't speak that way.

One of your characters is shitting their pants with fear and not using proper sentences while thoughts race through their mind? Okay. Having entire descriptive paragraphs that say shit like, "As is often the case wherever he goes, even in places where people should know better, all heads turn to stare no words just stares part of the reason is his superstar status part of it is because he's looking so damn good"? Really not okay.

It's too bad, too, because otherwise I would've liked the book a whole lot more. There were parts of it that I absolutely loved, but damn that punctuation!

Read it in a little over 3 days. It was pretty engrossing, but some of the passages (mostly the internal discussions) were a little long-winded.

I love Palahniuk; he's so nihilistic. The condom discussion was hilarious. But I'm going with 3 stars because the narrator started to grate on my nerves after a while.
