Surprisingly interesting for a book that repeatedly points out how little it can actually say.

Since so little is known - in truth, almost nothing - about Shakespeare, the author paints a portrait of Shakespeare by filling in the negative space around him, using the facts we do know about Elizabethans in general, playwrights and actors at the time, and so forth.

The writing isn't as charming or compelling as, say, Mother Tongue by the same author, but the book was still interesting enough to keep me reading. My only complaint was the defensive tone of the last chapter, in which the author shoots down the theories that Shakespeare wasn't Shakespeare; it stood out sharply against the even, scholarly approach of the rest of the book and was a bit of a negative way to end the book.

Still, definitely recommend for anyone interested in Shakespeare or Elizabethan society.

I love your review. And I totally recommend that you read Neverwhere next. It is, after all, based in the London Tube system, and I imagine you'll get to know the stations pretty well, but this book will add whole new layers to their magic.

I keep hearing his name, and usually it = geniusness. I’ve been meaning to read more of his books, as I’ve only actually read Stardust. I mean to read so many of his other books, but as always, I run into the “so many books, so little time” problem.

That said, after The Graveyard Book won both the 2009 Hugo and Newbury, I knew that this had to be high on my list. And what a delightful story! A character with the name of Nobody Owens? Who lives in a graveyard, watched over by the friendly (and sometimes, not-so-friendly?) ghouls who reside there? Fab.u.lous!
This is also a great read for the Halloween season. It’s that perfect blend of spooky, intriguing, and possibly dangerous – but not gruesome or actually terrifying. Gaiman’s tremendously evocative storytelling makes this a winner for adults and young readers alike!

If you don’t yet have plans tonight, I highly recommend a couch, a warm blanket, and a copy of The Graveyard Book.
Support your local indie!
