Surprisingly interesting for a book that repeatedly points out how little it can actually say.
Since so little is known - in truth, almost nothing - about Shakespeare, the author paints a portrait of Shakespeare by filling in the negative space around him, using the facts we do know about Elizabethans in general, playwrights and actors at the time, and so forth.
The writing isn't as charming or compelling as, say, Mother Tongue by the same author, but the book was still interesting enough to keep me reading. My only complaint was the defensive tone of the last chapter, in which the author shoots down the theories that Shakespeare wasn't Shakespeare; it stood out sharply against the even, scholarly approach of the rest of the book and was a bit of a negative way to end the book.
Still, definitely recommend for anyone interested in Shakespeare or Elizabethan society. ]]>
