And while his own story mirrors the lives of many of t...<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/The%20three%20stars%20are%20not%20to%20indicate%20the%20mediocrity%20of%20the%20entire%20book,%20but%20merely%20an%20average%20composed%20of%20the%20scores%20I%20would%20give%20for%20the%20various%20chapters.%0D%0A%0D%0AFor%20example,%20the%20entire%20beginning%20of%20Lives%20is%20devoted%20to%20Mike%20Rose's%20backstory.%20And%20while%20his%20own%20story%20mirrors%20the%20lives%20of%20many%20of%20the%20students%20he%20later%20talks%20about,%20and%20is%20therefor%20relevant,%20it%20doesn't%20offer%20anything%20significantly%20different,%20especially%20in%20any%20way%20that%20demands%20three%20chapters.%0D%0A%0D%0ALikewise,%20the%20end%20of%20the%20book%20veers%20into%20a%20lot%20of%20platitudes%20about%20pedagogy%20and%20the%20politics%20of%20education%20that,%20I%20imagine,%20were%20more%20revolutionary%20at%20the%20time%20of%20publication%20than%20they%20are%20now.%0D%0A%0D%0AWhere%20the%20book%20is%20amazing,%20however,%20is%20in%20the%20specific%20examples%20he%20has%20chosen%20to%20highlight%20from%20his%20experience%20as%20a%20teacher%20throughout%20the%20middle%20of%20this%20book.%20In%20these%20chapters,%20I%20felt%20I%20got%20some%20real%20advice%20on%20how%20to%20approach%20teaching.%20One%20thing%20shown%20again%20and%20again%20to%20me%20and%20that%20I%20know%20I%20will%20struggle%20to%20remember%20(which%20I%20MUST%20keep%20in%20mind%20to%20be%20a%20good%20teacher)%20is%20that%20poor%20performance%20does%20not%20equate%20with%20low%20intelligence.%20Time%20and%20again,%20Rose's%20examples%20demonstrated%20how%20the%20inequality%20in%20the%20education%20system%20sets%20disenfranchised%20students%20up%20to%20fail,%20and%20how%20with%20a%20little%20bit%20of%20analysis,%20such%20students%20can%20still%20learn%20to%20be%20better%20writers%20and%20to%20succeed%20in%20an%20academic%20environment.%20His%20patience%20and%20insight%20in%20these%20cases%20is%20inspirational%20and%20educational.%20Worth%20getting%20through%20the%20first%20three%20chapters%20for%20anyone%20interested%20in%20teaching.">more...</a>]]></body>

          <body><![CDATA[I don't even know where to begin with this book. Its magical realism was of course fascinating to me; Marquez IS the master after all. But throughout the novel there were so many sexist moments that I couldn't tell if Marquez was simply expressing the values of the time in the world he was writing, ...<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/I%20don't%20even%20know%20where%20to%20begin%20with%20this%20book.%20Its%20magical%20realism%20was%20of%20course%20fascinating%20to%20me;%20Marquez%20IS%20the%20master%20after%20all.%20But%20throughout%20the%20novel%20there%20were%20so%20many%20sexist%20moments%20that%20I%20couldn't%20tell%20if%20Marquez%20was%20simply%20expressing%20the%20values%20of%20the%20time%20in%20the%20world%20he%20was%20writing,%20or%20if%20these%20were%20his%20true%20attitudes%20about%20women.%20Mostly%20stuff%20about%20the%20nature%20of%20women%20and%20their%20roles.%20Which%20is%20not%20to%20say%20that%20there%20aren't%20strong%20women%20in%20the%20story,%20but%20their%20strength%20is%20all%20classically%20maternal%20and%20domestic%20and%20they%20are%20bound%20to%20their%20men.%20The%20storytelling%20itself%20seems%20to%20encourage%20one%20to%20accept%20his%20broad%20strokes%20of%20occasional%20gender%20commentary%20in%20the%20same%20vein%20that%20the%20reader%20must%20accept%20the%20magical%20realism.%20This%20is%20just%20how%20things%20are%20for%20the%20story.%20So%20maybe%20I'm%20just%20too%20modern%20or%20something,%20but%20I%20don't%20WANT%20to%20read%20a%20story%20where%20women%20just%20happen%20to%20be%20this%20limited%20(at%20least%20where%20the%20limitation%20isn't%20being%20used%20as%20a%20means%20of%20arguing%20against%20such%20limitations)%20and%20it's%20a%20little%20rankling%20that%20a%20book%20with%20such%20sentiments%20is%20so%20beloved%20both%20critically%20(nobel-winning)%20and%20popularly%20(Oprah%20book%20club-selected)%0D%0A%0D%0AAnd%20yet%20Marquez%20displays%20techniques%20of%20craft%20that%20I%20can't%20help%20but%20adore,%20like%20his%20looping%20narrative%20where%20he%20follows%20one%20tangent%20to%20its%20end%20and%20then%20circles%20back%20to%20pick%20up%20another,%20with%20each%20loop%20adding%20more%20texture%20to%20the%20pattern.%20And%20the%20same%20oral-tradition%20voice%20that%20demands%20I%20accept%20his%20fantastical%20and%20gender-biased%20world%20also%20serves%20as%20the%20perfect%20platform%20for%20such%20looping.%20And%20while%20in%20the%20middle%20it%20seemed%20as%20if%20some%20circumstances%20dragged%20on,%20by%20the%20end,%20the%20weight%20of%20the%20passage%20of%20time%20pressed%20upon%20me%20as%20did%20the%20heat%20in%20Macondo%20upon%20the%20Buendias%20at%20the%20end%20of%20the%20city's%20days.%20The%20hedonism%20of%20Aureliano%20and%20Amaranta%20Ursula%20was%20both%20something%20to%20revel%20in%20and%20pity%20as%20I%20watched%20their%20world%20crumble%20with%20a%20bittersweet%20fondness%20mixed%20with%20disgust.%20There%20was%20something%20equally%20repulsive%20and%20seductively%20fitting%20about%20the%20end.%20Biblical%20even,%20as%20if%20with%20the%20final%20words%20no%20one%20could%20dare%20question%20how%20the%20tale%20got%20to%20where%20it%20did.%20It%20simply%20was.%20And%20that's%20kind%20of%20how%20I%20feel,%20ambushed%20at%20the%20the%20very%20last%20moment%20by%20a%20wave%20of%20adept%20craft%20that%20has%20cut%20out%20the%20sac%20from%20the%20venomous%20barbs%20I%20held%20throughout%20the%20months%20of%20reading%20this%20book.%0D%0A%0D%0ADid%20I%20like%20this%20book%3F%20Its%20seems%20so,%20against%20my%20will.%20And%20I'll%20be%20damned%20if%20I%20didn't%20dog-ear%20passages%20to%20turn%20back%20to.">more...</a>]]></body>
