Just a lot of fun, what can I say? Oddly, as a lesbian, I haven't read many books strictly about lesbianism. This book, though, is less about that than what makes us lesbian--the fun of sex. All about that contained right here. Read it, play with it, your girlfriend will thank you.

Eleanor Flexner provides a wonderful commentary about the figures and acts that made equality much more real to women. As a woman I'm always humbled by the courage and hard work that went into making this a society in which I can feel free to want my freedom. This book brings home that lesson.

Essentially one in a series of books about evolution by Richard Dawkins this book was a great source of inspiration for me in understanding natural selection's power and evolution's myriad topologies. It is written for the layperson and is an entertaining and fun read while also imparting critical science lessons. Of course the premise is also philosophical and provides a wonderful critique of the idea life is so complex that it requires a creator: Essentially, if you found a watch on the beach you would have to conclude there was a conscious builder. Not so, points out Dawkins. With enough time natural selection has built things much grander than watches.

Darwin's concept of natural selection, explains Daniel Dennet, is essentially an algorithm underlying a kind of "universal acid" for solving naturalistic problems. You'll get a provocative history of how Darwin's theories have found themselves indispensable in almost every field of science and scientific philosophy. Despite the deepness of the subject this is one of Dennet's more accessible writings and I would recommend it for anyone who into reading about science--professional or layperson.

This is a complex book by the preeminent scientific philosopher Daniel Dennet. I loved the book for it's deep and yet entertaining examination of the history of consciousness and artificial intelligence. Frankly this book is written for professionals within the fields of neuroscience, cognitive psych., artificial intelligence, etc., who are also interested in philosophy. But even so for the interested layperson willing to work a bit with technical language there are incredible insights into the state of the art in thinking about thinking.

One of my favorite freethinkers is Susan Jacoby. So I'm biased. I've had a crush on her for years. Freethinkers is a good book--in it Jacoby details the strong historical secular libertarian, freethinking and humanist roots of the U.S. Especially enjoyable, for me, was that she includes a concise yet personalized history of suffrage and emancipation movements and how closely they are tied together. Frequently historical threads underlying current political and social movements and issues are drawn making history very meaningful--especially in the sense that Americans have trended towards anti-intellectualism and, bluntly, stupid behavior.

Fantastic book. A must read for humanists, freethinkers, and those interested in the history of American thought.
