An interesting read during the middle of the primary season. He has a gift in empowering people to believe that the current political narrative can change. However, while policy wonks may appreciate his substance, I found that his style is less attractive. Aside from an insightful historical commentary at the beginning and numerous personal stories, I guess I just don't care too much for policy books. I'd rather watch him speak....less

Every once in a while, it's good to read a book that makes you think really hard. Daniel Quinn's book does just that. A conversation with a circus gorilla turns into a philosophical affair that sometimes actually makes your head hurt. But if you listen to this gentle giant, most of what he's saying makes sense, and will cause you to make changes in your own life. Everything from the metaphysical to the environmental, there are good lessons to be learned, but only if you can get past that talking gorilla....less

Ishmael Beah's A Long Way Gone is probably one of the saddest books I've ever read. While Beah is a good storyteller, I kept having to remind myself that this isn't a novel, that this is his real-life account. Particularly towards the end, Beah's writing shines as he comes to grips with his past: how could he possibly forgive himself, forsake his country, grow up without a family, and build a new life without the shame of his former? Perhaps the memoir's biggest effect is personal: thanksgiving for my childhood, which seemed so perfect. While the memoir's beginning is difficult to read, the rest of the book leaves you relieved that someone survived to tell us this story....less
