Considering the young age of the author, I was impressed by how grippingly well-written this book was. Even not considering his age: it's quite good.

Yankoski's accounts of his time spent on the streets of America are compelling and ultimately, deeply challenge the reader to examine his or her faith and what it means to live a Christian lifestyle and to love our neighbor.

I'm tempted to criticize Under the Overpass for its being written specifically for a Christian audience; the arguments that Yankoski makes and the experiences he has to share would benefit a wide spectrum of readers -- not just those who claim Christ as their savior. But the book is what it is; and it succeeds tremendously as such.

Naturally, I was especially interested in the account of the time that the two travelers spent in the Ocean Beach neighborhood of San Diego, and couldn't help wondering if some of the characters they were describing were people I had actually seen or thoughtlessly stepped over while walking down the street in my own home town. ]]> http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/1183855 Meghan's review of The Secret Life of Bees

This little book provided a special experience. The first four stories were definitely my favorites, so after those I couldn't help but find that the remaining jewels in the collection less lustrous. But they were jewels nonetheless.

I wasn't blown away by this one as I was my Krauss' The History of Love. Man Walks into a Room still had some interesting and inventive elements to it, but it didn't grip me. Though the concept behind the story was fun and unique, the story itself dragged a bit. Simply put, I felt like I was reading an early effort by a good author. And that's what it is. Not amazing. But not bad. ]]>
