<about>Most of my reading these days follows two themes. I joined a book club in 2004 with some friends from my ecology masters program, the goal of which is to read books a) with strong female characters, b) dealing with women's issues, and/or c) written by female authors. We've been pretty diligent about it and have read about 50/50 fiction/nonfiction. When I'm not reading these, I tend to read books about the environment, nature, and science, and if there's an election coming up, books of a decidedly left-wing nature. I can often be found wandering around local nature preserves with my nose in various field guides, or trying to figure out my camera or binoculars. I will also read an occasional Spanish-language novel to keep my reading skills sharp. And I unabashedly love the Harry Potter series.

I unfortunately do not have very good retention of what I read; ask me to memorize Spanish vocab or Latin names of plants and I'm gold, but themes and plots completely escape me. Therefore all of my reviews are for books I've recently read, books I've read numerous times, or books that made an unusually lasting impression on me, good or bad.

My favorite authors are Ray Bradbury, Margaret Atwood, Barbara Kingsolver, John Irving, Tolkien, Stephen King, Carl Hiaasen and David Sedaris.</about>
