Not as good as I remembered it from the first time I read it. For some reason, I hadn't made the connection the first time I read it (probably right out of high school) that the book was set in the roaring 20s, so all the sexuality and tawdriness didn't impress me as much...it was all part of the scenery in that day and age. Plus, while I can appreciate Lawrence's lamentation of the industrialization of the countryside and the increasing materialism of society, I began to feel that he overdid it. Too much whining and bashing and repetition. It became tiresome after awhile. I also found Mellors rather repulsive...not only because he seemed to act contrary for contrariness's sake, but because of the unflattering descriptions of his physique...were the passages describing his skinny white legs supposed to be complimentary? But I guess I can appreciate the story for the "woman finding herself" theme and how it made fun of all the intellectuals sitting around and expounding like a bunch of self-important buffoons. ...less

My love affair with the Filet O' Fish and sausage McMuffin came to an end with this book. Not that I ate them every day, or even every month, but ohhhh, how they sometimes would call me. But after reading this book, I went cold turkey on fast food. I have only eaten Subway on about two occasions in the last 8 years, in instances of extreme desperation. Drastic and overdramatic, some might say...but I can't say that my life has suffered in any way from the lack of fast food, and I feel much better about my choices now. It wasn't even a gross-out factor that made me want to stop patronizing the fast food industry; The Jungle was a much more horrifying book on that level. Rather, it was the social and environmental injustices wreaked by the industry, as well as their sneaky dissolution of the important safety and health regulations put into place after The Jungle, and the creepiness of artificial flavors and chemicals put into fast food. Ick. This is one of the most influential books I've ever read....less

A riveting collection of essays and stories from Abbey's stint as park ranger in Arches National Park in the early 60s. He tells about the natural beauty of the place (before the National Park Service fouled it up with its paved roads and high accessibility, as he complains), regional road and river trips, encounters with odd characters, brushes with death, and philosophical ramblings about development and its ill effects. I read it with great sadness and wistfulness, because I've visited Arches and loved it, and can only imagine now how much more beautiful it would have been before the masses showed up and developed it. ...less

Interesting look at how industry can redesign nearly everything to be more recyclable and beneficial to society and the environment. A bit depressing in the sense that there's not much that you, the reader, can immediately do about it; it made recycling in its current state seem pretty futile. But all in all, a quick read and it does give you some hope that there ARE forward-thinking people working on these problems, and that maybe we won't poison and pollute ourselves into oblivion....less
