I don't normally read sci-fi, but this book came highly recommended. Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game is a fascinating exploration of manipulation and societal control. It offers philosophical food for thought on how far a society should sacrifice the well-being of the individual for that of the collective good. An excellent first-hand account of the Spanish Civil War. Orwell's personal experiences, from the trenches of the front, to the fighting on the streets of Barcelona, to hiding out from the police, give us a unique perspective on the war. At times he gets a little bogged down in the intricacies of the political infighting, but overall he makes a fairly good sense of a very complicated situation. Traveling through the jungle with freedom fighters, making public protests in Myanmar, getting arrested and encarcerated twice, tortured, Mawdsley's story not only follows his personal struggle but gives some good background information on current events in Myanmar. If a store carries books on Go it's a good bet that Learn to Play Go Volume I will be in stock. This installment gives an easily understandable explanation of the rules and basic technique, and it fills in the corners with a little history, etiquette, and a few short bios of some of the top professional players.
