Eloise is a trip--you've gotta read these out loud, the language just effervesces. There's not really a plot per se, but the whole point is just to take you into the imaginative and impish world of a precocious child: "Then I do my champagne exercises," "we could see these reindeers zimbering through the trees in Central Park." Just joyful to read....less

"I'm weird. I love flipping through books like this. The pictures manage to make the most mundane things seem elegant. Fun little ideas for organizing, cleaning, decorating.

I think Doug Pagitt has a keen and challenging idea here: preaching as an actual conversation that takes place within the congregation. The pastor does a lot of preparation, but things don't stop at "Amen." Instead, everyone is invited to participate, ask questions, share insights and stories. Not sure if my reservations are for good reasons (we give primacy to the pastor during the sermon because his or her vocation centers around biblical study, theological reflection, interpreting the vocabulary of faith, making discipleship concrete) or bad (I'd be so scared to just open the floor). Still, he seems to have his pulse on 21st century ways of being church, and there's great understanding and passion to everything he says. Definitely a book to wrestle, and maybe experiment, with....less

I'm really enjoying this series, although this one was a bit slower going for me. Was a bit put off by the hero Jamie this time around. I guess he was acting in character (stubborn, strong sense of honor), but some of his behavior (and his failure to apologize completely for it) was pretty cringe-worthy. I'm continually astounded by Gabaldon's ability to recreate that world, though....less

Probably the best wedding book I've read yet. The format is excellent, nothing overwhelming. The pictures are lovely. I especially like the page at the end of each chapter devoted to a real couple and their wedding. The bigger wedding manuals are probably still handy to help fill out the details, but this book is a very elegant guide, and an enjoyable read....less
