The picture here is of the hardcover version; it is available in paperback. A great book, recommended by Dr. David Servan-Schreiber in his anti-cancer book, about the best things to eat for protection against cancer. I have learned a lot from this book that doesn't make it into the popular press--such as that it's the phytochemicals that matter in fighting cancer more than "anti-oxidants." Fortunately, most of the recommended foods are fun to eat anyway (like the dark chocolate--mmmm!), so this book helps you not feel guilty for spending money on good food.

This book is extremely sensible. It is very well-written, to start with, and is an enjoyable read in its own right. In addition, it gives solid advice, telling people to combine a good diet with medical treatment for cancer. I also like the fact that it cites many studies--this is not some kind of "kook" book that advocates stupid methods for treating yourself. For those to whom it matters, the author is not religious (he's not anti-religious, either), so practicing Christians need to do a bit of weeding, but it's not hard to do--and indeed, I think it has the potential to alert Christians to the great opportunities for meditation that exist within our own great faith.

This book by a French doctor, Pierre Barbet, is one of the best of its kind I've ever read. Dr. Barbet was a surgeon, and he describes in great detail, from his examination of the Shroud of Turin and from other historical sources, how Jesus Christ died on the cross. Because of his medical knowledge, he also believes that the Shroud is genuine--i.e., that it was not faked, since no painter could have done such a good job of getting the medical detail right. In addition, no medieval painter, at least, would have been willing to contradict the existing iconography, as the Shroud does. He brings up the point that, even though it clearly is the shroud of someone who was crucified, lots of people were crucified under Roman rule around that time. How do we know it's Jesus? The marks from the crown of thorns are there--and that was not a customary part of the punishment, but rather unique in Christ's case.

This book is full of just such fascinating detail, firmly placing the Lord's Passion in space and time and greatly enhancing one's understanding of the Christian faith.

This book can be compared to Connie Willis's Domesday Book, except that hers is a bit more literary. But Crichton has a good handle on the Middle Ages, and he also knows many of the mistaken beliefs people hold about medieval times. His bibliography at the end is excellent. I enjoyed pondering the idea (from quantum physics) of the "multiverse." I like what happens to the Pointy-haired type at the end....

I need to read this again. An absolute must for anyone who needs to educate himself better. Each chapter has a list of books at the end that a person should read--authors like Joseph Pieper and G.K. Chesterton are recommended. This book is what real education is about; Schall does not confuse training with education.

This is great background reading to such mystery authors as Edmund Crispin and John Buchan--because you realize that during World War II, the English really were afraid that the Germans had an extremely effective spy network in Britain. They couldn't tell, and the spies they caught were of such bad quality that they couldn't believe the Germans, with their reputation for efficiency, didn't have better! Eddie Chapman is a fascinating character, too!
