I am getting ready to read this book again. I just finished it a couple of days ago, but I want to go back and pick out some nice, big, pretty vocabulary-list type words she used and I want to try to give myself a second chance at thinking about the issues she brought up. I especially enjoyed/was provoked by her ideas on faith and on "knowing" about religion. The protagonist of the story is a Congragationalist minister and in his private thoughts he admits that he isn't always sure that he has genuine answers to all of the questions people have posed to him - although he has always given answers when asked. He also tries to dig to understand the tension in the father/son relationships of his life. It's easy to relate with any close familial relationship in your own life.
Anyhow - a good book that was written poetically and thoughtfully. Let me know what you think out there if you read it....less

My bias on this review is that I LOVE Willa Cather's writing. I always feel a bit nervous recommending her books because the story lines aren't usually too thrilling. But, man, can this woman paint a picture. I'm living in Southern Arizona right now and this book takes place in the desert of New Mexico in the 1800s. She described my scenery so well and so lovingly that I'm seeing where I'm living much better than before and I think that is rad.
The book is more a compilation of short stories than a "novel." It is centered around an, you guessed it, archbishop and his friend priest and their travels around their new and extensive diocese in early Santa Fe. They meet the evil priests and the good hearted priests as they travel around, they meet extravagent people and poor people and tell some fantastic tales. And in the whole process you get the feel for the richness and harshness of the southwest historically and environmentally that makes it such an intriguing, FANTASTIC place. ...less

I'm getting to be a big fan of David McCullough. His books are about the only non-fiction books you'll probably see me review here, but he makes his biography's so darn readable that my brain can not only handle, but enjoy what he is putting down.
According to McCullough, Truman wrote an amazing number of personal letters and and kept a daily journal which made this biography a very intimate look at what it is like to be President. Beyond just looking at the man that Truman was, I recommend this book for the span of history it covers. Truman was a turn-of-the-century man who saw both world wars and beyond. He also went from being a farm boy to a president so you see the country from both of those perspectives.
Anyhow - good book - but LONG for a mother of two on the go - I still need to renew the book at the library 20 more times to finish the bit I have left....less
