          <body><![CDATA[This collection of short stories absolutely destroyed me and I mean that in the best possible way.  Bonnie Jo Campbell is my new favorite writer and it's a shame this didn't win the National Book Award.  I suspect the reason it didn't was because it was labeled as 'too depressing', which for me, is ...<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/This%20collection%20of%20short%20stories%20absolutely%20destroyed%20me%20and%20I%20mean%20that%20in%20the%20best%20possible%20way.%20%20Bonnie%20Jo%20Campbell%20is%20my%20new%20favorite%20writer%20and%20it's%20a%20shame%20this%20didn't%20win%20the%20National%20Book%20Award.%20%20I%20suspect%20the%20reason%20it%20didn't%20was%20because%20it%20was%20labeled%20as%20'too%20depressing',%20which%20for%20me,%20is%20a%20cop-out.%0D%0A%0D%0AAmerican%20Salvage%20is%20confrontational.%20%20Each%20story%20forces%20you%20to%20examine%20your%20own%20life%20and%20the%20lives%20of%20these%20Michiganders.%20%20In%20most%20cases,%20the%20characters%20are%20living%20in%20economical%20ruin,%20what%20would%20be%20considered%20poverty.%20%20They%20are%20people%20clutching%20onto%20the%20past,%20living%20day%20to%20day%20with%20what%20they%20have,%20but%20have%20hope%20for%20the%20future.%20%20Well,%20I%20saw%20hope%20in%20these%20characters%20and%20I%20think%20Campbell%20saw%20hope%20too.%0D%0A%0D%0AProbably%20the%20most%20apt%20metaphor%20for%20the%20collection%20is%20the%20salvage%20yard,%20which%20takes%20center%20stage%20in%20King%20Cole's%20American%20Salvage.%20%20Campbell%20describes%20the%20catalytic%20converters%20that%20Johnny%20and%20his%20uncle%20save%20from%20broken%20down%20cars,%20%22...mostly%20they%20were%20dirty%20and%20rusted%20from%20the%20slush%20and%20mud%20and%20road%20salt,%20but%20each%20of%20their%20bodies%20contained%20a%20core%20of%20platinum.%22%20%20These%20people%20are%20those%20catalytic%20converters,%20their%20lives%20covered%20in%20slush%20and%20mud,%20abandoned%20by%20society,%20living%20on%20the%20fringes...but%20at%20their%20core%20is%20something%20of%20value.%20%20They%20are%20still%20human%20beings,%20worthy%20of%20receiving%20and%20giving%20love.%20%20These%20are%20not%20bad%20people.%20%20They%20are%20just%20doing%20what%20they%20have%20to%20do%20to%20survive,%20to%20feel%20human.%0D%0A%0D%0AThere%20is%20a%20strong%20theme%20of%20redemption%20and%20forgiveness%20that%20runs%20through%20the%20stories%20that%20left%20me%20feeling%20hopeful%20for%20most%20of%20these%20characters.%20%20Each%20are%20searching%20for%20a%20modicum%20of%20redemption,%20something%20to%20absolve%20them%20from%20their%20lives,%20and%20in%20a%20handful%20of%20situations,%20redemption%20is%20achieved.%20%20Maybe%20not%20in%20the%20traditional%20sense,%20but%20these%20characters%20and%20their%20lives%20aren't%20traditional,%20so%20why%20should%20their%20redemption%20be%3F%0D%0A%0D%0AI%20could%20go%20on%20for%20a%20few%20pages%20about%20the%20richness%20of%20American%20Salvage%20but%20I%20will%20just%20say:%20read%20it.%20%20Of%20the%20maybe%2050%20books%20I've%20read%20this%20year,%20this%20is%20Top%20Five.%20%20Personal%20favorites%20were%20The%20Yard%20Man,%20The%20Inventor,%20The%20Burn,%20Winter%20Life,%20King%20Cole's%20American%20Salvage,%20and%20Storm%20Warning...though%20all%20the%20other%20ones%20were%20magnificent%20too.%0D%0A%0D%0A%22Johnny%20nodded%20to%20Slocum,%20not%20in%20agreement%20with%20anything%20he%20was%20saying,%20but%20because%20he%20realized%20that%20the%20man%20was%20indeed%20a%20monster%20and%20that%20he%20was%20also%20a%20regular%20guy%20like%20Johnny,%20the%20same%20guy%20Johnny%20had%20talked%20to%20until%20four%20in%20the%20morning.%20%20Slocum%20was%20a%20screwup,%20the%20way%20Johnny%20was%20a%20screwup,%20only%20much%20worse.%20%20Slocum%20should%20go%20to%20prison%20for%20life,%20but%20that%20didn't%20mean%20hew%20was%20all%20that%20different%20from%20Johnny%20or%20anybody%20else.%22%20%20Pg.%20128%0D%0A%0D%0A%0D%0A">more...</a>]]></body>

          <body><![CDATA[It's easy to read Lin and conclude that he writes about nothing.  I mean, that's what I was thinking half the time.  But what is behind the 'nothing'.  And what do I mean by 'nothing', because clearly he's writing about something.  'Nothing' is really a representation of the current twenty something...<a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/It's%20easy%20to%20read%20Lin%20and%20conclude%20that%20he%20writes%20about%20nothing.%20%20I%20mean,%20that's%20what%20I%20was%20thinking%20half%20the%20time.%20%20But%20what%20is%20behind%20the%20'nothing'.%20%20And%20what%20do%20I%20mean%20by%20'nothing',%20because%20clearly%20he's%20writing%20about%20something.%20%20'Nothing'%20is%20really%20a%20representation%20of%20the%20current%20twenty%20something%20generation%20(of%20which%20I%20am%20a%20part)%20that%20spends%20way%20too%20much%20time%20on%20their%20Macbooks%20(this%20is%20a%20Macbook%20on%20which%20I%20am%20typing)and%20talking%20on%20Gchat%20(of%20which%20I%20am%20also%20guilty...guilty%3F%20%20Why%20do%20I%20say%20guilty%3F).%20%20%0D%0A%0D%0AThe%20principle%20character%20is%20Sam,%20and%20from%20what%20I%20gather,%20Sam%20is%20a%20representation%20of%20Tao%20Lin,%20mostly%20because%20he%20said%20so%20on%20the%20inside%20book%20flap.%20%20Sam%20wanders%20through%20his%20life,%20%22goalless%22,%20working%20his%20vegan%20restaurant%20job,%20going%20to%20parties,%20occasionally%20kissing%20girls,%20and%20yes,%20shoplifting%20from%20American%20Apparel%20(and%20not%20being%20very%20good%20at%20it).%20%20So.%20%20This%20is%20my%20generation.%20%20And%20I%20see%20some%20of%20myself%20in%20Sam;%20the%20goallessness,%20the%20ebb%20and%20flow%20of%20depression,%20the%20wandering,%20the%20estrangement%20from%20others.%20%20%0D%0A%0D%0AUltimately,%20SFAP%20left%20me%20feeling%20worn%20out.%20%20It%20didn't%20make%20me%20feel%20less%20alone%20because%20I%20had%20found%20someone%20else%20leading%20a%20similarly%20disillusioned%20life.%20%20It%20didn't%20make%20me%20feel%20motivated%20to%20change%20my%20circumstances.%20%20It%20didn't%20make%20me%20feel%20hope%20or%20even%20despair.%20%20It%20just%20left%20me%20feeling%20tired%20and%20ordinary.%20%20I%20think%20his%20writing%20style%20had%20a%20lot%20to%20do%20with%20the%20overall%20sense%20of%20exhaustion.%20%20And%20I%20can%20see%20that's%20how%20Lin's%20environment%20and%20life%20translates%20itself%20onto%20the%20page.%20%20He%20writes%20like%20he%20is%20looking%20at%20the%20world%20through%20the%20lens%20of%20a%20robot%20from%20a%20distant%20planet%20who%20happens%20to%20find%20himself%20moving%20through%20modern%20America.%20%20A%20robot%20that%20drinks%20a%20lot%20of%20smoothies.%20%20And%20not%20a%20clunky%20robot...a%20robot%20like%20Data%20from%20Star%20Trek:%20The%20Next%20Generation.%20%20Ya%20know,%20like,%20a%20highly%20advanced%20robot.%0D%0A%0D%0AI%20will%20probably%20read%20a%20little%20more%20of%20Tao%20Lin%20to%20get%20a%20better%20perspective%20on%20his%20writing%20but%20Shoplifting%20From%20American%20Apparel%20gave%20me%20a%20pretty%20good%20idea%20about%20what%20I'm%20in%20for.%20%20And%20if%20he%20ever%20comes%20across%20this%20review,%20which%20it's%20very%20possible%20he%20might,%20I%20say%20to%20him,%20Tao,%20this%20is%20just%20my%20weak%20human%20opinion.%20%20My%20brain%20moves%20slowly%20compared%20to%20your%20advanced%20robot%20brain.%20%20Disregard%20all%20of%20the%20above.%0D%0A%0D%0AStop%20Smiling%20Magazine%20has%20an%20interview%20with%20him.%20%20I%20think%20I'm%20gonna%20go%20and%20read%20that.%20Bye.%0D%0A%0D%0A%20">more...</a>]]></body>
