A very proper English household is shaken up when their energetic and unconventional cousin comes to live with them. Sophy is a delightful heroine, and this book was a lot of fun. It was, alas, marred for me by a couple of very unfortunate bits of hamhanded ethnic stereotyping--a greasy-locked hooked-nosed villainous Jewish moneylender in a book written in 1950? Good grief! I can understand characters having prejudices that fit their time, but when the author seems to wholeheartedly agree with them it really makes the book less enjoyable. A love story woven around the historical Battle of Waterloo, the historical details are apparently quite well-written and accurate. However, I must confess to being much more interested in whether the tempestuous and spoiled Barbara could learn to love her suitor and settle down. The characters are totally involving and charming, and when the fictional characters eventually dovetail with the actual battle the results are quite effective. However, the strategic lead-up to the battle was tedious at times... ]]>
