My dad had some old MAD Magazines he let me read when I was younger, and my favorite part was always Spy vs. Spy. When I found out about this book (I don't remember how) I asked for it for Christmas. When my brother gave it to me, I was happy, but then I actually read it. I was just expecting a book full of all the Spy vs. Spy comics, but instead I got a book full of interesting background, and comics from before Spy vs. Spy and MAD Magazine in addition to all the comic strips I was expecting. I love the book....less

The book was filled with craziness, alternate realities, and some interesting ideas. There's also a lot of psydo-science that drove me batty because I knew enough to know it felt like all bunk. It's still a weird and entertaining read....less

My mom handed this to me to read, sounding like she was recommending it a lot. I started into it, and didn't really like it from the start. I kept going on the off chance that it got better, that the characters sucked less, or something good would happen, like one of the sucky main characters might die! The only character I liked at all was Applecore, and she didn't get as much credit or time in the forefront as she really should have, however given what I thought of the rest of the book, it is quite possible that the author would manage to ruin her too, had he focused on her more.
At any rate, the political overtones seemed heavy handed, and forced. All the characters except Applecore failed to gain my sympathies or affection, and the ending just left me thinking "Why did I waste my time on this?" When I brought all this up to my mom once I finally finished slogging through it, she admitted she considered it a light read, and didn't realize I would be so offended by it....less

Cryptonomicon brings me two of my most favorite characters ever, Lawrence Waterhouse and America Shaftoe. Lawrence is awesome because he's so caught up in his numbers and calculations he doesn't see much else, but somehow he eventually does the math and figures out how to function in life. It takes him a while, but once he gets it sorted out he ends up better off than a lot of people for it. Amy on the other hand, she's just so full of trouble, fun and adventure how could you not love her?
Also, one day I would like to see this book made into a movie. I know that Hollywood would absolutely murder it, but as long as they include the scene towards the beginning of the book with the jar heads running over the boxes of banknotes and making for a bank note blizzard, I will be happy and I'll pay to see it on the big screen. ^_^ (Read the scene in question here if you're unfamiliar with it, it's awesome: www.cryptonomicon.com/text.htm...)...less

I really enjoyed seeing Christopher Moore stretch his legs and give us more time span within a book than he usually did. His books typically cover a couple days to a month, and this one managed to span multiple years.
I enjoyed revisiting old friends like The Emperor, Minty Fresh and Jody, as well as meeting new ones. Also, I just absolutely loved the cover for the book. :)
Also, even though I really am not a dog person, I would love to have that pair of hell hounds Sophie has. :)...less
