Not as good as Six of Crows but better than I was expecting! Took an unexpected turn about halfway through that distinguished it from a lot of other books of this type, plus the worldbuilding was really good.

I was so disappointed when I realized this wasn't a trilogy because I wanted more. These were so good.

On the one hand this is an interesting glimpse into the lives of professional classical musicians and some of the pathologies of arts funding and education in the US....on the other hand the author's descriptions of her own life and relationships wer ...more

This had its funny moments but I wish it had been organized better. It's not a chronological narrative and is instead structured around a series of lessons or pieces of advice the author learned, but the lesson or advice is often not clear enough to ...more

A really fun heist tale plus I'm already embarrassingly invested in all three ships. Basically everything you want in a good fantasy read.

“I am simply a 'book drunkard.' Books have the same irresistible temptation for me that liquor has for its devotee. I cannot withstand them.”
L.M. Montgomery

George R.R. Martin
“... a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge.”
George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

John Green
“…because nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff… Nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump-up-and-down-in-the-chair-can’t-control-yourself love it. Hank, when people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is ‘you like stuff.’ Which is just not a good insult at all. Like, ‘you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness’.”
John Green

Audrey Niffenegger
“I don't know about you, but I'm kind of fed up with realism. After all, there's enough reality already; why make more of it? Why not leave realism for the memoirs of drug addicts, the histories of salt, the biographies of porn stars? Why must we continue to read about the travails of divorced people or mildly depressed Canadians when we could be contemplating the shopping habits of zombies, or the difficulties that ensue when living and dead people marry each other? We should be demanding more stories about faery handbags and pyjamas inscribed with the diaries of strange women. We should not rest until someone writes about a television show that features the Free People's World-Tree Library, with its elaborate waterfalls and Forbidden Books and Pirate-Magicians. We should be pining for a house haunted by rabbits.

(from the review of Kelly Link's Magic for Beginners in The Guardian)”
