Gresham's classic novel of a carnival sleight-of-hand artist's rise (and fall) as an a-list conman is one of the best I've read -- a precursor to the gritty street fiction of Nelson Algren or Mickey Spillane, but without the stilted dialog or literar...more

Cognitive Surplus by Clay Shirky

Forever the optimist of social media, Shirky ignores or quickly dismisses most of the downsides of the rapid spread of social media and the prospect of ever less privacy and ever more connectivity. A good book to read if you want to be inspired towar...more

The writing starts off a little dead in a kind of attempt to mimic the voice of gumshoe crime writers and newspapers of the era it describes. But as you get into it, you find Rayner has dug deep into Los Angeles' history to discover the half-understo...more

Wow. Fascinating look at prewar LA streetlife from one of the quintessential Angelino novelists. Fante takes a lot of risks in ths gritty exploration of relationships, writing and the city. After Fante, I don't feel I need Bukowski much anymore.
