<about>I have read, on average, 50-100 book a year since 1963. I read a few hundred through grade school and high school before that. It adds up, I suppose, to a few thousand books. I don't remember them all. Some of them were not very memorable to begin with. But by and large I am fascinated by words taking shape on pages and creating worlds which draw me into them. When I read, for instance, Larry Woiwode's "Beyond the Bedroom Wall" in the mid-Seventies, my dream of being a writer myself was altered. That was the book I wanted to write, but I don't know if I could have written it quite as well as Larry did. Its surprising how many people there are in the world who are drawn to writing words down on pages for people like you and me to read. And how varied and how engaging they are. </about>

That she still pulls four stars from a reader a few generations removed from when it was written speaks volumes of the durability of her writing, and the fine storyteller she was. You should indeed be proud to be the grandaughter of Siri. Women were central to the settlement of the plains, and I always knew that those who stayed became women who were bigger than life. Now I know that the same holds true even for those who went back home. Harding County was America's last frontier. Archer Gilfillan, in his book, SHEEP, muses that when homesteading finally came to Harding county, the requirement for "proving up" a homestead was reduced from five years to three years by the federal government, because, in Harding County, "it took only three years for a man to go completely broke." If you haven't read Gilfillan's book, you might enjoy it. It has been reprinted several times since its first appearance around 1930, most recently, I think, by the University of Minnesota. It is a look at Harding County from a different perspective, the perspective of a highly educated alcoholic bachelor sheepherder who did go broke in less than three years out there.
Thanks again for the comment. I shall always treasure the memory of the book.
