This is an absolutely fantastic book that should be required reading for everyone, particularly students. Klein gave me an entirely new perspective on world history and the role of the United States. Although there was much I already knew, she added much detail that I didn't. In particular, I found her chapter on Israel fascinating. . .There are undercurrents to the events we read about in the papers, about which most of us are unaware. Even me, who prides myself on being so well read (including on Israel and the occupied territories!)...less

In the tradition of "First They Shot My Father" (the memoir of a girl growing up in the Khmer Rouge's Cambodia), this beautiful first-person story tells a tale that is at once both deeply sad and inspiring. What this woman withstood -- and more than that, overcame -- during the years of Chairman Mao in China is unbelievable, and yet it's true. Which gives hope to all of us....less

This is a fascinating biography of Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN extrarodinaire who served in almost every humanitarian and political role for the UN around the world during his too-short lifetime -- from Cambodia, to Serbia, to East Timor, to Iraq. Through Sergio's personal story, complete with the "good, the bad and the ugly" despite her obvious admiration of him, Power also explores the limits of what the UN can accomplish in these times of growing multinational conflicts. Without a consensus among powerful nations, the UN is held back from fulfilling its promise, and it's hard to believe we'll ever achieve that. ...less

This is a fascinating personal tale that simultaneously weaves together the politics and culture of Rhodesia/Zimbabwe during the anti-white rule of Mugabe with the after-effects of the Holocaust generation. We hear so much about the suppression of blacks; this is a look at the terorization of the white farmers in this post-colonial African country. ...less

This is a decidedly pro-immigration/open borders book, and for that some of my friends have criticized it. However, probably because I agree with Fernandes, I liked its mix of human stories and facts. There is much I didn't know about how immigration works today and just what the consequences are. I think it should be required reading.
