This is an atypical historiography. Gordon's background was in philosophy which he says in inseparable from the philosophy of history. I agree. His thesis is that historians secular and religious enter and leave their work with presuppositions. In part one he deals with epistemology and historiography. Clark admits that much of this monography is redundant. At times you can feel him hitting the reader over and over with the same ideas. He studies the great characters of American and Anglo-European history. He especially focuses on Churchill, Helmut Kohl, and Margaret Thatcher in the European theatre. His work is not Carlylian hero worship, but well balanced. I am impressed with his knowledge of key civil rights leaders commonly left out of mainstream textbooks. ...less

This is a difficult read primarily because it was taken from Hegel's lecture notes. I found the first fifty pages the most valuable in this small monograph. It might be beneficial to read Hegel with tertiary source, although be careful because there are so many different kinds of Hegelians writing about Hegel. ...less
