Ms Griffin has said that the premise of this book is a sort of "what if?" where Edgar Allen Poe's short story by the same name is concerned. She wanted to take it further (it was one of Mr Poe's shortest stories)and examine what this world would really be like.

I love Darby, beautiful, smart, tragic, breakable; she is so guilt-ridden over her twin brother's death from the plague. I dig her best friend April. The few things that they originally had in common were being in positions of privilege that separate them from the wretches who suffer from the plague's effects and probably most importantly- wanting to forget the plague by glamming themselves up to drink and drug themselves into oblivion at the Debauchery Club- only to start it all over again the next day. Imagine when the eventually find out that they genuinely care about (dare I say love?) each other.

As far as male characters, there's Will, humble, honest, handsome, hard-working, the guy who does whatever he has to do to take care of his younger siblings, even if, as we find out, that isn't always the honorable thing where others are concerned. Oh, and Elliot, I did NOT want to like this arrogant young guy out to save their world from his evil uncle, the Prince. He's too self-centered, or is it too concerned with saving humanity, to love Darby. But wait..don't count him out!

This whole idea of having to wear specially, scientifically created masks to stave off the effects of this insidious, unspeakable plague is a HUGE part of this story. The times the characters are daring enough to take their masks off, I had a kind of edge-of-my-seat panic about what might happen to them.

Anyway, in the spirit of not spoiling this for any takers out there, I'll stop. The plague of this story transformed the city into a dark & frightening place that only the rich could be apart from, and then only marginally so. But, I wanted to be IN this hauntingly beautiful and very exciting place, plague and all!

...and yes there IS a sequel, "Dance of the Red Death", due out next year sometime. LOVE me some Bethany Griffin!! <3(less)"
