I started reading this book with some pretty low expectations, I must say. However, I was very pleasantly surprised (well, "pleasantly" doesn't seem appropriate to use in a review for a book with such a bleak storyline). I really was pulled into the story--and like many others have said, some of the imagery used in the book will stay with me for a long time.
I will say, since so many people commented on the punctuation (or lack of); I was surprised to find that I didn't mind it at all. Something about the lack of quotations marks and "he said"'s suited the tone of the book. It made it seem...quieter, more somber.

"This was a pretty good read--full of fun animal factoids. The last chapter wasn't really to my liking--the style of writing felt a bit forced and awkward in some parts.

I really wanted to like this book...but I didn't. The premise was good and I enjoyed the small town Alaska feel, but the author's style of writing really started to grate on my nerves. It felt very forced at some points, as if she knew what she wanted to mention, but wasn't sure how to tie it all together (the Egg Salad Sandwich chapter is a case-in-point). I could appreciate the feeling of each chapter being different--something that was easy to put down and pick up at different times. However, I felt like each individual chapter was barely coherent at times--I couldn't tell where she was going with her story, and felt irritated a lot. About halfway though, I figured life was too short and there are too many others books out there...so I quit. ...less
