about this author
For the past 30 years I have taught English in a high-poverty high school in rural South Carolina, and every other week I share the voices of my students and my concerns about education and parenting in an op-ed column in The Charlotte Observer. "Notes from a Classroom: Reflections on Teaching" is a compilation of some of those columns. If you are interested in young people and education today, you may find that these columns also speak to you. |

"A bit of a sophomore slump after an amazing first novel, but brilliant nonetheless. Foer takes on the aftermath of 911 with a poignant story of a boy's search for his missing father. Foer's lyricism is exceptional.

"I'm not a fan of historical fiction per se, and growing up and living all my life in the American South, I'm a bit weary of the Civil War, but this book was full of fascinating characters who leaped off the page for me. Even the evil characters were...more

"Only an Austen-o-phile would have the patience to trudge through Jane's letters to her siblings, but then no one but an Austen-o-phile would buy this book to start with! I wish it had more background information about people Jane mentions or comment...more

"The most maddening aspect of this book was how pitiful the payoff is at the end. The poor reader suffers through 300+ pages of worrying about the main character who suffers from an undiagnosed illness only to find out....nothing.
